Our Family Traditions – Наши семейные традиции

A happy and harmonious family is based on strong family traditions. There are a few traditions in my family which I would like to tell about.

Summer holidays

Every summer we all go on a camping trip. For a few days we stay in a cottage on a lakeside. We swim in the lake and lie in the sun, sometimes we go to the nearest village for a day out.

Every day we build a fire and cook food on it. This is the process that unites the whole family. Somemake a fire, others cut vegetables and cook. This is the moment when we don’t stop talking to each other and laughing at jokes.

Grandmother’s birthday

Fortunately, my grandmother lives not too far from us so we often go to visit her. But her birthday is a special day which everyone looks forward to.

This is the day when all the relatives come to her place to celebrate. My family is very big. I have uncles, aunts and cousins. My grandmother’s birthday is the day when we all sit around one big table.

Personal achievements

We always support and help each other in different life situations. This builds the confidence and helps become successful. This is why personal achievements of each of us are the reason for everyone’s joy.

Such events as promotion, admission to the university or victory in a competition are celebrated in my family. Usually on this day we go to a restaurant and spend the rest of the day together.

New Year

New Year is a family holiday. Traditionally, we stay at home on this day. In the evening we sit at the table and remember everything that happened to us throughout the year. After dinner we usually leave to meet our friends at the New Year’s tree in the city centre.

В этот день все родственники собираются в ее доме. У нас очень большая семья. У меня есть дяди, тети, двоюродные братья и сестры. День рождения бабушки – день, когда все мы собираемся за одним большим столом.

Личные достижения

Мы всегда помогаем и поддерживаем друг друга в разных жизненных ситуациях. Это помогает стать уверенным и успешным. Именно поэтому личные достижения каждого – это повод для всеобщей радости.

Такие события, как повышение по службе, поступление в университет или победа на соревнованиях, становятся поводом для праздника в моей семье. В этот день мы обычно всей семьей отправляемся в ресторан и остаток дня проводим вместе.

Новый год

Новый год – это семейный праздник. По традиции мы проводим этот день дома. Вечером мы садимся за стол и вспоминаем о том, что произошло в ушедшем году. После ужина мы встречаемся с нашими друзьями на новогодней елке в центре города.

Look at a strong family and you are likely to find one with strong family traditions. Whether it is activities that the family always does, the everyday routines or ways they celebrate holidays and special occasions, these family rituals bring a sense of belonging, familiarity and routine to family members. In strong families, members become more committed to each other when they spend time together and create bonds. Traditions provide a sense of continuity, understanding, connectedness and love that strengthens family closeness. Family traditions are also opportunities for families to have “good times” and establish “good memories.” Rituals touch the hearts of family members in a positive way and help members feel good about themselves and each other.

Wayne Matthews, human development specialist with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, explains that family traditions help form the story line for a family’s unique history with each generation adding or deleting certain traditions that enhance the family story. Matthews shares other benefits of family traditions. Family Traditions:

Encourage family members to spend time together. Quality time together is necessary to build and maintain strong family relationships.

Allow members of the family to share the ups and downs of life, supporting one another when problems arise and celebrating the successes when they occur.

Help establish and communicate what is really important to a family and its members – its values, its belief system and its place in the larger world.

Provide a means of working out the family’s interpersonal dynamics, dealing with conflict, hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

Provide a means of sharing love, laughter, loyalty, unity and a sense of commitment.

Traditions don’t have to be extravagant, intense or require a lot of planning. They can be as simple as reading to your child every night in the same comfy chair, having a movie and pizza night every Friday or discussing things you are grateful for around the dinner table each evening. Traditions are the glue that keeps a family together. We all have very busy lifestyles, and adding a small tradition here or there can make all the difference to your family. But what do you do if your family doesn’t have many traditions? Well, you create them of course! Somebody has to create all these little rituals, so why not let it be you?

There are some family tradition ideas to get you started:

The birthday hat. Get a hat that is well suited to your family and make this the “official birthday hat.” The idea is that each person wears it at their birthday dinner, whether that be at home or out in a restaurant. It can look like a cake complete with big felt candles out of the top. It’s ridiculously awesome.

Birthday cakes. Create the birthday boy or girl’s favorite type of cake. Is it cheesecake, devil’s food cake, or black forest cake? Or is it not even cake at all? Do they prefer pies, cookies, or cupcakes? Whatever it is, make their favorite treat an annual tradition for their birthday.

New job . When someone in your family gets a new job, a promotion, or a raise, create a tradition that they take you out for dinner. It doesn’t have to be a fancy or expensive dinner – you can go for pizza or wraps.

Christmas dainty exchange . Christmas can be a very stressful time, but baking all those Christmas goodies doesn’t have to add to it. Include as many or as few people as you want, and choose two to three items each to bake. Bake enough to share with everyone in your group and agree to a date when you’ll meet up and exchange the goodies you’ve all made. You get a huge variety of baked goods, and you don’t have to spend weeks preparing. Who doesn’t want that?

Saturday mornings in bed. Choose a morning on the weekend to spend in bed with your family. You don’t need to spend hours laying around, but 15 to 30 minutes is a nice length of time. Try having coffee, tea, or milk with a couple of cookies. Relaxing and taking a few minutes to connect with your family can be a great way to kick off a weekend.

Easter egg hunt . A classic in many households around the world. It is always a lot of fun and the morning would be full of laughter.

Potluck . This is a great way for extended family members to showcase their culinary talents. If you decide to do this monthly or bi-monthly, consider themes – make one night Mexican, and the next time Thai, followed by Italian. Theme nights can introduce you to a whole new world of cooking. Bring print-outs of the recipe so people can take it home with them.

Family Olympics . When the weather is nice, spend the day at the park, at the lake, or at the beach. Decide on sporting events for whole family – think bean bag toss, horseshoes, badminton, volleyball, and synchronized swimming. Create teams, or compete individually and have prizes for all participants.

Creating a feeling of unity, warmth and closeness with your family is priceless. There are no rules and there is no “right” way to do this. So take initiative, get creative, make it happen and most importantly have fun!

Семейные традиции – это то, что переходит в семье от одного поколения к другому; это то, что объединяет всех членов семьи, делая их жизнь радостной и интересной. В нашей семье, а она у нас большая: мама, папа, сестра, брат, еще один брат, я, и, конечно же, многочисленные родственники – тоже есть свои семейные традиции. по воскресеньям мы печем блины, садимся всей большой дружной семьей за круглый стол, пьём чай с мёдом и обсуждаем события прошедшей недели. Общение с близкими людьми – самые светлые минуты в моей жизни.И это незабываемо!.. А как мы любим летними вечерами всей семьёй совершать прогулки на велосипедах.Отмечать праздники в кругу семьи – тоже наша традиция, о которой я и хочу рассказать. Не зря говорят: «Как встретишь Новый год, так его и проживёшь». Праздник Нового года – самый яркий праздник в нашей семье. Готовиться к празднику мы начинаем заранее. И пусть под маской Деда Мороза мы видим такие знакомые, родные глаза, всё равно мы верим маминому рассказу о том, что настоящий Дед Мороз поручил нашему дедушке раздать нам подарки, потому что он сам не успевает прийти ко всем детям. Наш веселый праздник продолжается весь вечер, а потом мы целый год с нетерпением опять ждём наступления Нового года… А ещё есть самая дорогая для меня традиция. Наступает вечер, все дела сделаны. Я подхожу к своей кровати, ложусь и, глядя на огонек ночника, жду маму. Вот она садится на краешек кровати, берет в свою руку мою, нежно гладит меня, потом целует, и я слышу самые дорогие слова: «Спокойной ночи, моя любимая доченька!» И сны мои текут спокойно…Может быть, кому-то эти традиции покажутся не такими уж яркими, но зато они наши, собственные, и дороже их для нас нет ничего на свете.Благодаря традициям, существующим в нашей семье, мы учимся любить, уважать, доверять, ценить минуты общения с родными людьми, помогать друг другу. It is so wonderful when all the family members come from different parts of the city or even world to spend time with their relatives. Usually it happens on holidays, as they can be days off and it is a tradition for some holidays to gather together. Such holidays are called family ones and usually they are similar in different countries, though there can be some exceptions. As for me, I think that family holidays are Christmas, New Year, Easter and Birthdays. In spite of a different origin they are celebrated in the family circle, but of course, some close friends can be also invited.

Another popular family holiday is New Year. It is celebrated on December, 31, when people welcome the coming of the next year. Usually many preparations take place before the holiday. People stand in long queues in order to buy products for their New Year tables and spend long hours in front of the cooker or oven some exotic dishes. Our New Year holiday is associated with champagne, fireworks and one famous salad called Olivier, sometimes accompanied by TV programs. When the clock strikes twelve, people cheer and make wishes. They are happy to forget past offences and misunderstandings and start the new one with everything good.

Who can make a kid happier than beloved grannies, , aunts, and cousins? They bring huge presents, hug, kiss and play with him or her. The same situation is with elderly people. They do not need posh restaurants, cafes or expensive presents: is the presence of children, grandchildren and other close people. So birthday is a holiday that deserves a title of a family one.
